I might suggest a simple addition to the rules to prevent these blowups:

Notices of violations of the list rules are off topic. Send such
notifications in private e-mail with a Cc: to the list administrator.
Only the party immediately responded to or the list administrator should
send corrective messages.

Precedent (since Usenet rules are in force):

Many people on the list care that the rules are followed, few (if any)
care to be a party to "corrective" messages that will also be archived
and may prove inflammatory.
