For rc1 those subtitles are supposed to work out-of-the-box. You need a
font that contains the needed characters and might have to set -subcp
correctly.
If it does not help, please send us a problematic subtitle file.

not a known bug, but in general if you have something that does not
play, upload it to ftp://upload.mplayerhq.hu/MPlayer/incoming
