Do you use "-vo vidix" ?
Great possibility is that your video-card is not supported by vidix 
drivers.
Try to use "-vo xv" or if everything fails, "-vo sdl" (this last, will 
require
SDL library installed when mplayer was compiled)
see also, at the output of "xvinfo" command, post it here.
