didn't work bu
 mplayer -vo x11 http://www.e-village.jp/earth-
c/html/9902feb/gif/MVC-001V.MPG
and
 mplayer -vo gl http://www.e-village.jp/earth-
c/html/9902feb/gif/MVC-001V.MPG
did work

and adding
vo=x11
to ~/.mplayer/config makes even the plugin work
