Indeed. MPlayer is not ordinarily distributed via Debian package, and
the packages are (varyingly) not supported here AFAIR. In order to get
the most recent versions, you need to install from source. (Or from RPM,
perhaps - I believe that there are more recent versions maintained by
one of the developers, although my unreliable memory does not say
which.)

XvMC video output can be used in MPlayer, but is very limited in some
ways. I don't use it myself, so I can't really tell you more than that.
