That's because FFmpeg has a separate CVS repository, and keeping
libavcodec the same in two different repositories would be clunky and
involve far too many duplicate commits. It's vastly simpler to just
check out both and copy the libavcodec directory across.

After this has been done once, it is alleged that issuing the MPlayer
CVS-update command will update the libavcodec directory as well - but it
does not do so for me; if I update my MPlayer source tree, and then
update my FFmpeg source tree, and compare the datestamps on a file which
has changed in the libavcodec directory in the latter location with the
same file in the former location, the FFmpeg version is invariably new
while the MPlayer version is unchanged since the last time I copied the
directory across. This is not how CVS is supposed to behave, but it's
how it works for me.
