It's a pity there is no Build-Suggests/Recommends.

It might be nice, but I have no idea how to make this part easy and
adaptive - on one hand I want ./configure part to be non-interactive, on
the other I would like to be able to provide some way to pass options to
configure, say MPLAYER_CONFIGURE variable that can be set before running
scripts...

Ok, I'll try to rewrite this as soon as possible. 
 You said that postinst is using obsoleted debconf interface, what
 should I be using then?
