In case you haven't already them on your checklist, you may have a
look at VLC's and transcode filter layer.
I don't know how good they are though, but I wouldn't be surprised
that their design differs subtantially, as VLC's main purspose is
video playback, and transcode's is ...  ahem .... audio/video
transcoding.
