Only those who are on very slow systems will notice the difference. 
And just because it's the default, doesn't force everyone to use it. 
Add"-vfm libmpeg2"  to your command-line/mplayer.conf or modify
codecs.conf to change the default on your own system.  

I think the default codec should have stability and bug-free-ness over
speed.
