anyway you didnt told us teh most important thing: gcc version.

it's known that old libmpeg2 was heavily optimized to gcc 2.95,
and it performs much worse under gcc 3.x
i remember some benchmark, when using gcc 2.95 libmpeg2 won,
while using gcc3 the ffmpeg12 won the match.

you should try at least 2.95 and latest 3.x (3.4.1?) gcc.
