Hit, Reimar!
You're right.
But I'll need to recompile (re-emerge in my case) mencoder to be able to
do so...
media-video/mplayer package doesn't honor language use flags, so I get
the output in Italian (a language that I use sometimes, but which is a
hindrance in my reporting the exact way mencoder fails).
As soon as I get a little more time on my disposal (am busy and lost at
the moment), I'll do so.
In fact I will first try -noslices...
Actually I can do that much pronto!, it's not recompiling...
Wait...
Yes, you solved it! It works! Thank you!
This is the line that I added in the profiles:
noslices=1
I added that line, the profiles for first and second pass can be easily
seen here:
http://lists.mplayerhq.hu/pipermail/mencoder-users/2012-January/012996.html
...
I added that line after
"vf=harddup"
substituting that one line with two lines:
"vf=harddup
noslices=1"
(without quotes) and it just works!

Apart from nothing in the free world playing most any videos in such
elegant way from the command line like mplayer does, mencoder is still a
force to be reckoned with for some more years to come, I believe.
What do you think, Reimar, would it be worthwhile and useful that I post
my mencoder.conf file with all the profiles that I used over quite a few
years now, that I perfected actually (within my abilities) for my
purposes over long years of use... for recording TV, or composite or
satellite input, for transcoding and archiving various kinds of videos.
It's not perfect, but occasionally I did achieve decisively superior
results than are common with the same input...
I would really only like to give a little back to open source, however
little, as I am happy with the free software that we have bequeathed...
Anyway, I forgot the name of the Hungarian (I am Croat and that makes me
a neighbor to him) who began the whole of Mplayer/Mencoder project.
Where did the destiny take him in the meantime. Is he possibly still around?
God bless all the readers!
Miroslav Rovis
(P.S. No need to go further with giving more info on the fake failing
that I experience due to my lack of understanding, obviously. No need to
go and recompile mencoder, I guess. This issue is solved!)
