Thanks, but that makes no difference.
Here's the format detection when I send mencoder one of these files.

Maybe the avc1 component needs an update. "movtoy4m" is working with two
problems. First, it's slow. 2nd, it has a dimming effect on the video which
has to be compensated for. I'm still looking into the possibility of using
qttoy4m from Mjpegtools.
