Xvid has slightly better defaults, but that's about it.  Start with
-lavcopts mbd=2:trell:v4mv and you'll get quite good results from lavc,
while being faster than Xvid.  And lavc, unlike xvid, offers the
opportunity for further improvement if you want it, thanks to the
numerous adjustable options.  In fact, the command-line he was
using should be giving decent results, so whatever problem he has isn't
likely to be fixed by switching to Xvid using default settings.

But what really bothers me about Xvid is that it doesn't preserve
details.  It's noticable at low bitrates, where lavc shows artifacts,
but still shows more fine details in the picture, and with bitrates
somewhere above 1000 (depends on the material), lavc starts
looking much better than Xvid, no matter the options.
