[MPlayer-cygwin] Microsoft MPEG-4 V1 & V2

Can anyone tell me about the different levels of compatibility between 
Microsoft MPEG-4 V1 & V2.  I'm using V2 and I get some random sound artifacts 
every once in a while when playing a video.  Would V1 be any better?
