Yes, I also found that using -quiet made a huge difference for the 
Cygwin MPlayer on Win98. Without it, a movie would play smoothly for a 
few seconds, then pause for a few. It seems Win98 has great trouble with 
console apps. Why are we not surprised? Actually, Cygwin apps seem to 
perform far worse on Win98 than on NT or 2000. It may be that little 
effort has been put into optimizing Cygwin on Win98, since the 
developers mostly don't use it. Who can blame them? I only have Win98 
installed for a couple of games that don't work fully on Wine.
