I have sony hc90 camcorder, it record films in PAL Wiedescreen with 16:9
aspect ratio but withe 720x576 resolution of normal PAL the only difference
is that the pixels are not sqare (aspect ratio is 1,4). This is a standard
for many widescreen films form camcorders.
Windows Media Player somehow detects that the pixel aspect ratio is 1,4 and
shows this film correctly, so it can be done.

When I run mplayer -aspect 16:9 the film is ok.
I can provide some sample clips in PAL Widescreen.

Playing bez glowy.avi.
