Is it h.264 (avc) with b-frames?
The x264-encoder for example has a VfW-compatible mode for storing
b-frames in avis. This mode is as far as I know MUTUALLY EXCLUSIVE
with the regular (read "correct") way of storing b-frames (when for
example using mkv or mp4 containers).

This means, that your stream might be not (easily) muxable to an avi-container.
