Note that I'm talking about left/right and center in the rear, not the
front.
It doesn't change what you said, but typically the left/right (speaker
4-5) channels are less complex, and combining 50% of each into the back
channel #6 likely wouldn't be so bad.

Yes, I thought about that too, and indeed it's more complex.
Turns out DTS NEO:x does that in the receiver, but mine, even though it
was a top of the line $1500 Denon 3808, does not support that.
