Maybe this info can be useful: I noticed this behavior when I compiled
MPlayer with --enable-menu and then started it with -menu (after
enabling menu keys in input.conf as described here:
http://www.mplayerhq.hu/DOCS/HTML/en/fonts-osd.html#osdmenu ). In that
case the subtitles disappeared when the video was paused, both with
"-vo xv" and "-vo gl".
