properly at boot time automatically, and this is DEFINITELY an option
that can cause corruption with bogus settings.

Yes of course. BTW, there's no corruption issue to worry about with
cdrom/dvd drives. :P
One more thing -- you'll also want to turn on 32bit io (-c1). This
will cause corruption on some really old (at least 6 or 7 years old)
drives, but it helps performance quite a bit.
If you DO want to test dangerous options, it's recommended to mount
the fs readonly while you test, and also set the device readonly
option with hdparm. Then you'll just crash your system (rather than
destroying your data) if it doesn't work...
