It is really embarrassing that I didn't try such an obvious thing
earlier, but muting the sound _before_ pressing "." for the first time
seems to be a viable workaround for -ao pulse (pulseaudio won't crash
then). As stated above, it doesn't help for -ao alsa, unfortunately.
