Hi guys,
Let me add my 2c, no intention to flame or offend. These are pretty
useful and entertaining lists (indeed I have received good help from
Nico and others, and I am sure I'll receive and give more in the
future), it's silly to get each other for petty reasons.
For respect of people who seem to be quite militant about this issue,
here I do not top-post. Yet I would love for people to appreciate my
point of view. In my life outside the mplayer/ffmpeg list I am indeed
a proud top-poster; not because my software is poor as sometimes it is
hinted at, but because I believe it's the quickest way to read emails.
What the posting rule here seems to ignore when it makes claims about
the way people naturally read, is that "modern" humans do *not* read
email as they come, but have them presented in threads: also on cheap
web-mailer emails are typically read by thread. That is why most of
the time you don't need to be reminded of what was said in the
previous message: it is just one keystroke away! On the other hand, to
have to scroll down hundreds and hundreds of lines you have read just
3 secs earlier in the previous message before you can get to the point
of the current one, can be very boring and time consuming. Also
sometimes we fume at emails which are perfectly readable and sensible,
where the abrupt reaction to people who don't even realise what they
are busted for is much more of an annoyance to the list than the
original top-posted message.
So I dare say that: (1) it is equally easy to write a wasteful and
terribly bad emails whether or not you top post; (2) in a well written
email top-posting or bottom-posting is not really an issue, because
when you put exactly the amount of context necessary, a few lines
below or above is immaterial enough not to cause offence to sensible
intellects; (3) when emails are terribly bad, because as eg it often
happens they just add one line at the bottom of a gigantic and useless
quotation, then top-posting is superior, as it allows the reader to
get the new contents at a glance without having to scroll down through
the redundant context.
In conclusion, it appears to me that the post etiquette could be
improved by saying: please, write good emails, only quote the *least*
amount you need to establish the context of your sentence, don't
forget people have already read the rest of the thread and can easily
get back to it at a keystroke in case of doubts, top-post or bottom-
post sensibly according to the contents of your message and to your
tastes.
Regards.
