Total system hang is usually not problem of mplayer, but of the system.
Try to rule out the affected systems. try -nosound, try -vo null.
AFAIK sb emu10k are quite well supported, so it is unlikely, the intel
videocards are quite common cause of problems (second after ati video
cards). it is also possible that win32 loader to allow memory
corruption caused by the binary codec (most wmv require them for
decoding).
Having kernel with magic sysreq key is bonus, use it (if it works).
(keyboard leds should flash on kernel panic, at least on ps/2
keyboards).
The recent 2.6.x kernels support kexec startup of emergency
-backup-kernel after kernel panic, that allows producing proper
bugreport to the kernel people. Read the
/usr/src/linux/Documentation/kdump/kdump.txt for details.
