I downloaded the dvdnav and latest mplayer code and compiled it. the delay problem still persists. ://dvdnav works, but you just see it, you can't select a language or anything on the mplayer window, it just doesn't react.

I tried the older cvs version - exactly the same problem. copied first 10 MB with mencoder - the same delay.

As is visible from your output, you're trying to play Seinfeld. Since
they come from Sony Pictures, they are copy-protected.
Mplayer can play these with reasonable results (only seeking is
sometimes a bit hairy with these DVDs), but you can dump it and seek as
you like it.
You only need dvdnav and a current SVN checkout. DVDnav is nowadays also
found in SVN, svn://svn.mplayerhq.hu/dvdnav/trunk/libdvdnav2 (is a
smaller version, but works nonetheless).
install, compile, and then playback with mplayer dvdnav://1 instead of
mplayer dvd://1.
All other things remain the same, though there's ATM (at least the last
time I checked) a problem with reading out the IFOs and therefore you
have to specify manually language and subtitles via -sid and -aid,
-slang and -alang won't work... Don't know when this will be fixed.
Keep in mind that this copy protection is present in all Sony DVDs
(after the logo change from Columbia Tristar to Sony), including the
newest James Bond, Seinfeld, Married... with Children, Monty Python's
Flying Circus, and also things coming from Sony Classical (the video -
not the music label) such as "The Quiet" and "The Merchant of Venice".

Alex
