Hi Philip,
I get similar results with mplayer. It plays fine with xine on my linux
amd64, including sound -- kaffeine, qplayer, whatever uses the xine engine.
load_plugins: probing demux 'quicktime'
xine: found demuxer plugin: Apple Quicktime (MOV) and MPEG-4 demux plugin
video discontinuity #1, type is 0, disc_off 0
waiting for audio discontinuity #1
audio discontinuity #1, type is 0, disc_off 0
waiting for in_discontinuity update #1
vpts adjusted with prebuffer to 35538
load_plugins: plugin ffmpegvideo will be used for video streamtype 25.
ffmpeg_audio_dec: increasing buffer to 98304 to avoid overflow.
load_plugins: plugin ffmpegaudio will be used for audio streamtype 18.

spu_offset=0 pts
xine_play
vpts adjusted with prebuffer to 35619
ffmpeg_video_dec: direct rendering enabled
audio_alsa_out:open pause_resume=1
output sample rate 22050
That's from running "xine --bug-report EM-0093_EarlyX_era.mov". Hoping
this can be useful to diagnose why mplayer isn't playing it.
ffmpeg 20070208-0.0
libxine1 1.1.2+dfsg-2
mplayer 1.0-rc1cvs20070118-0.2
Incidentally, VLC plays it flawlessly too.
