Right here I get the following two lines explaining my lack of sound in 
xine:
ffmpeg_audio_dec: couldn't find ffmpeg decoder for buf type 0x3180000
audio_decoder: no plugin available to handle 'QDesign Audio v2'

I hope that adds more data for whomever can solve this problem in mplayer.

My primary interest is actually to use mencoder to covert it to mpeg2.
