You have to unzip the Essential Windows Codecs there.

Not really. Unzip the Essential Windows Codecs into that codecs
directory. Until you do that, you more than likely will continue to have
problems:
http://www3.mplayerhq.hu/MPlayer/releases/codecs/windows-essential-20061022.zip
The directions on the web do say that you will have to do at least those 2
things or the software will not work. You might notice that when you unzip
the above file you will have a windows-essential-200..... folder full of
dlls. Just copy all the dlls from that folder into the codecs folder. You
should be ok.
What's nice about the program is that you really don't have to register any
components: it just works by copying the files onto the drive. But you do
have to put the dlls into the codecs directory yourself. Somebody using a
MSI Windows Installer more than likely could have made a Windows Installer
(msi) which would put everything in the right places. Nevertheless, once
it's setup properly, you should find it be a superior program on the Windows
platform. If you really get stuck, I'll post an msi you can use.
But until you copy those codecs in that directory, I doubt you'll have any
success.
