Got this DVD (original and yes, it is mine!) Revenge of the Sith. It
plays well in my set-top box, in my other computers, but not on my
laptop (all linux). At this point I can't think what is the cause? Bad
software combination or faulty hardware???
Just so that we are clear, I am using the same mplayer package in both
my laptop and my desktop, and it is the latest as far as I can tell:

apollo>rpm -qi mplayer

Summary : MPlayer, the Movie Player for Linux
Description :
MPlayer is a multimedia player. It plays most video formats as well as DVDs.
Its big feature is the wide range of supported output drivers. There are
also
nice antialiased shaded subtitles and OSD.

On x86, additional Win32 binary codecs should be added to /usr/lib/codecs/.

and on and on and on until I CTRL-C

Exiting... (Quit)
apollo>

The sound is almost there, but not really. It stops, it jumps and
sometimes squeals. The image is bad... scrambled squares; every once in
a while a clean frame that quickly deteriorates...

The same drive/software combination plays well other DVDs (Star Wars I,
II for example, as well as non encrypted DVDs).

Trying ripping works fine (vobcopy -m), in the sense that there are no
errors (haven't tried it till the end, just long enough to reach
VTS_07_?.VOB where the main title is), but... the resulting VOBS play
just as bad.

trying to play it with XINE, when it gets to the title proper brings up
a messagebox saying:
The source seems encrypted, and can't be read. Your DVD is probably
crypted. According to your country laws, you can or can't install/use
libdvdcss to be able to read this disc, which you baught. (Media stream
scrambled/encrypted)
and that's it...
but I do have libdvdcss installed as follows:

apollo>rpm -qi libdvdcss
Name : libdvdcss Relocations: (not relocatable)
