Actually, there is no "trick". The difference is that by default, Windows
has none of what you need, so you have to download a lot of
software from many different places.

Something is wrong. That should not be necessary.

You need to install gcc (the C compiler).
In light of all of the above, I would recommend that you follow the Mingw
procedure, as it explains step-by-step everything that is necessary. It will
take some time to get everything that you need in place, but you only
have to do it once. Just remember to use the current versions of xvid,
freetype, etc.
Also, www.live.com is now www.live555.com, and the --with-livelibdir option
to configure has been removed. Now, the "live" folder has to be in one of a
few specific places. I keep the "live" folder in /usr/local/lib.
