Well you are wrong. Video overlay means xv, but "opengl overlay" has
nothing to do with 3d acceleration. Just set opengl overlay option to
"no" in xf86config/xorg.conf and enjoy xv together with opengl. Why have
you turned opengl overlay on in the first place if you don't even know
what is it and why you might need it? It's not like any opengl
application you are going to run requires it.

That aside, don't use xv on radeon, use xvidix (together with
svgalib_helper if you don't want to run mplayer under sudo) or gl.
