Well, I reinstalled Pre8 with the following configureation:

./configure --prefix=/usr \
--confdir=/etc/mplayer \
--enable-largefiles \
--with-codecsdir=/usr/lib/mplayer/codecs \
--with-freetype-config=/usr/bin/freetype-config \
--with-livelibdir=/usr/lib/live \
--enable-menu \
--enable-live \

the verbose output looks a little better, but still the stream only  
plays for a couple of seconds before dying with "Exiting... (End of  
file)".
