Actually, that *did* solve the problem!

If you want to tinker with it anyway, the files are at 
  ftp://ftp.mplayerhq.hu/MPlayer/incoming/cat-table.tar.gz
and the old command line was
   mencoder mf://*.jpg -mf type=jpg:w=800:h=600:fps=8 -ovc copy -oac
copy -o output.avi
