Did You notice improovement in speed of movie playback with gl/gl2 + ATI drivers compared to -vo xv. When I use gl/gl2 with xorg drivers it works incredibly slow (much, much slower than -vo xv), that's why I am asking.

Does installing ATI drivers require some acrobatics. Did You try to uninstall them, (I wonder whether it is easy to go back to xorg drivers in case of not satisfying results)?
