Hi,
I don't know if this is intended or not, but for me, vobsub extraction 
never worked with -ovc copy. I have to do something with the video also, 
otherwise mencoder doesn't "catch" the subs graphics, somehow.
I obtain good speed with -ovc raw and then specifying -vf format=yv12, 
and maybe also scale down the image to 16x16.
