[MPlayer-users] no sound with kplayer

I just installed mplayer/kplayer 0.5.3 onto Debian
(knoppix 3.8.1) via apt-get, but am getting no sound
when I play any video.  ALSA audio driver is loaded
with OSS emulation, and xmms plays audio fine. 
Excerpt from the message log is shown below.  

BTW I could not find the referenced codecs.html file.

Also, what directory do the codecs get installed into?
