[MPlayer-users] compressing an avi.

My wife has decided to start storing FoodTV episodes to use as her own personal "OnDemand" setup.  The problem is my 120gb drive is filling up quick with the 300mb 30 min episodes.  All of these are currently .avi files.  Is there a way to compress these to save space?  My playback pc is a dedicated 1.8ghz, so requiring more processor time to save space is fine.
 
Any pointers are greatly appreciated to get me looking in the right direction.
