If only it were that easy. In my experience, mplayer will try several
times to read a corrupted sector, and sometimes it will continue.
However on a _few_ occasions I have had it stop with an I/O error.

Lastly: Does anyone know how to properly reply to message on this
mailing list, if you receive the daily digests? I had to form this reply
by hand, so I'm sure it would end up in the right spot :(
