I appeared to be having a similar problem.  Debian upgraded
me to alsa 1.0.6 breaking ac3.  I upgraded my in-kernel
alsa drivers to 1.0.6 and though the open error goes away,
I am no longer getting sound using hardware ac3.  Rather, I
heard sound for about a quarter second when the stream
starts then silence.  Is anyone else getting this on an
SBLive?
