When watching from a TV card, mplayer doesn't handle audio at all, so it
can't possibly send it to the arts daemon.
"immediatemode" is an mplayer option you need to look at. It should
solve your problem.
If not, you'll probably need to use a 3rd-party program to record from
the capture device (line-in on 'virgil') and send it to the arts daemon
output.
