[MPlayer-users] Distorted output with xv and Voodoo3

When playing certain AVI's or DVD's, the output using the xv driver is
distorted--it's as if certain blocks of the image are smeared around
rather than being redrawn properly. It's difficult to describe
although I could probably take a digicam picture of it if necessary.
This happens on 1.0-pre5, using no special options to ./configure (no
CFLAGS either) although it has happened on earlier version.
Other file formats and most AVI's are fine.
>From an AVI that doesn't work:
Opening video decoder: [ffmpeg] FFmpeg's libavcodec codec family
Selected video codec: [ffodivx] vfm:ffmpeg (FFmpeg MPEG-4)
AVI that does work:
Opening video decoder: [ffmpeg] FFmpeg's libavcodec codec family
Selected video codec: [ffdivx] vfm:ffmpeg (FFmpeg DivX ;-) (MS MPEG-4 v3))
Using "-vc odivx" on the first AVI simply crashes mplayer.
Output with x11 or sdl drivers is undistorted.
I understand some xv problems can be caused by insufficient video ram.
I reduced screen resolution (to 1024x768 16 bit) and disabled backing
store but this did not make any difference.
System:
Voodoo3 2000 AGP (16MB)
K6-2 500
256MB RAM
XF86 4.3.0
