Okay.

However, by putting my foot in it, I did find the docs that cover much
of what I couldn't respond to... in appendix 'b'. I don't like to gripe,
but, imho, the site needs a little, erhm, 'whitespace'.
Wow. And it all exists on my hard drive. I'm an idiot.

Yes, I'll be working on that. It's an old box, so, it _might_ be done by
the time I'm done typing.
In retrospect, there was a stream I couldn't play, which prompted me to
try the CVS to update, since you can't really do anything until that's
been done.
I have been getting a lot of warnings in the compilation. I've only
learned of late to log the terminal output so I can look at it later.
And I enabled ./configure --enable-debug=3 just in case that'd be useful.

Good point. Never would've thought of that.

Wow. I could try that if it made any sense to me. To be quite honest,
this is the first package that came with a configure script so I could
make it. I don't know squat 'bout CVS. Really. Nada. Zip. Zil.
... Do you mean to install _alsa_ from CVS? And then downgrade that?
I appreciate all this feedback, if nothing else. I know I'm too verbose
myself. '-)
Given that, should I send the compile log somewhere, with all the errors
maybe?
Okay. I'll put this here for those who have read this far. Using the OSS
driver emulation worked.
Below is all the stuff I could've sent the first time if I'd RTFM.
Having read the fine manual, I have to say they are probably the best
written and most informative documentation I've seen to date for any
product. It should be adapted for publication.

Ok. Made and installed. Failed on local dumped stream.
gdb mplayer output follows. I'll save the compile log, or however
_that's_ reported, for another time, if it's called for.
