Can you give the exact output. That should help.
On my old Pentium II Linux system (without soundcard) playing XviD content
will do something like this:

Detected AVI file format!
VIDEO:  [XVID]  132x176  24bpp  25.00 fps  198.6 kbps (24.2 kbyte/s)
Opening audio decoder: [mp3lib] MPEG layer-2, layer-3
AUDIO: 22050 Hz, 2 ch, 16 bit (0x10), ratio: 7000->88200 (56.0 kbit)
Selected audio codec: [mp3] afm:mp3lib (mp3lib MPEG layer-2, layer-3)
Opening video decoder: [ffmpeg] FFmpeg's libavcodec codec family
Selected video codec: [ffodivx] vfm:ffmpeg (FFmpeg MPEG-4)
audio_setup: Can't open audio device /dev/dsp: No such file or directory
AO: [null] 22050Hz 2ch Signed 16-bit (Little-Endian)
Building audio filter chain for 22050Hz/2ch/16bit -> 22050Hz/2ch/16bit...
Start playing...
This file was encoded with XviD build 3
VDec: vo config request - 132 x 176 (preferred csp: Planar YV12)
VDec: using Planar YV12 as output csp (no 0)
Movie-Aspect is undefined - no prescaling applied.
VO: [fbdev] 132x176 => 132x176 Planar YV12
Using MMX for colorspace transform
A:   1.8 V:   1.8 A-V:  0.002 ct:  0.006   45/ 45   6%  0%  3.2% 0 0 0%

MPlayer often gives clear error-messages about what is going on. See for
instance the not be able to open the soundcard on my system (because it
isn't there. :-) ).

A default-compilation should be able to play DicX/XviD content.
