Can you give the exact output. That should help.
On my old Pentium II Linux system (without soundcard) playing XviD content
will do something like this:

MPlayer often gives clear error-messages about what is going on. See for
instance the not be able to open the soundcard on my system (because it
isn't there. :-) ).
A default-compilation should be able to play DicX/XviD content.
