I'm not the original poster, but, to me, a named pipe, or even a 
socket, where mplayer would listen for commands would be perfect. Maybe 
even something in the same style as XMMS and its xmms_remote_* API for 
controlling xmms.. 

(and yes, I'm aware of -slave)
