no, you don't have to....

i bet the file was encoded with xvid :)

this is the heuristics i use:

if the file looks garbled i try -lavdopts bug=16.
if that doesn't help i try all the other bug= possible values.

if that doesn't help i report it as a bug here.

btw. if you have a fairly new mplayer version ( like a cvs snapshot, or
maybe the latest rc is enough ), then this problem is auto-detected and
mplayer will automatically compensate => you don't have to do anything
=> that's why i haven't seen the problem
