I used to find that the BES video was too dark, too... There's an option for 
the mga_vid module called mga_brightness which fixes this with the mga/xmga 
vo device. I've found that mga_brightness=25 is about right - I've put it in 
my /etc/modules.conf file.

I don't know how you adjust the brightness in Xv mode, though.
