As always, i might be wrong, but AFAIK MPlayer is supposed to be a MOVIE
player, and it being able to play MPEG-layer3 audio files is just a side
effect of that. I have read (several times) Arpi saying the issues concerning
MP3 audio are not to be fixed, and the reason for that was that adding 
workarounds to play correctly all mp3 files would degrade detection/playback
on movie files. (or something like that..)
