imho system time is nothing to do with mplayer, it's your kernel.
maybe ide dma / irq unmasking etc (see: hdparm) setting, or your kernel
or whatever.

BTW, 80% is too high for your CPU ...

It's about 40% on my AMD Duron 600MHz clocked at 800, with G400.
