Really? I have a similar application setup; haven't
yet played a DivX file on the TV, but I heard it
doesn't look so good :-(

You may want to take a look at the Freevo project:
http://freevo.sf.net
They use Python for their On-Screen Display (OSD), so
no need to install X, and part of the OSD allows you
to browse your movies, recorded programs, MP3's, etc.,
as long as their in directories that you have defined
in the configuration file.
