MPlayer == *Movie*Player for Linux
MPlayer != MP3Player for Linux

use xmms or whatever, im sure there is an esd plugin for it.

you don't need a 'decent' or expensive soundcard, even the ens1371/70
a widely used chip on 20$ soundcards has two DACs which are routed
together.
you can do for example: mplayer -ao alsa9:hw:0,1 yoursong.mp3
and playing some other sounds (quake) using OSS-emu which is mapped by default
to hw:0,0.
