try -ao alsa9 -abs [1234]

1 through 4 sets different buffer/periodsizes. if it doesn't work
bugreport, see DOCS/BUGREPORT for detailed description how to do
that. at least a mplayer -v output would be very helpful.

if you want to access your first soundcard you don't have to pass any
paramter to alsa. hw:0,0 is the default anyway.
